Do you have a few pounds to lose before your next cruise? Would you believe me if I told you you could make money for losing that weight?

I first heard about HealthyWage a few weeks ago. The concept was simple, you ‘bet’ on yourself and your ability to lose a certain amount of weight within a specific time frame (both set by you). If you meet your goal, you win!

Of course my first question was “Is this legitimate?” And after some research, I can confidently state it is. But more on that in a minute.

Did you know studies have been done on the use of financial rewards to help with weight loss motivation? Some have even been published in such prestigious journals as JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association). Those studies are the basis of HealthyWage. Even more importantly, while there are studies ‘proving’ this, just think about it. If you had money on the line, (not to mention the potential to win even more money!) wouldn’t you be more motivated to meet your goal? I know I would! (Especially if that money paid for my next cruise!)

So raise your hand if you’d like to lose some weight before your next cruise. Now, keep it raised if you’d like to have some extra money to either help pay for that cruise or to pay for some excursions or drinks.

If your hand is still up, keep reading as I explain how HealthyWage works (you can put your hand down).

How HealthyWage Works (or how to set up your own HealthyWager):

Although there are a variety of different challenges you can participate in, perhaps the easiest to sign up for is the HealthyWager. When you participate in the HealthyWager, you can win up to $10,000 on your individual weight loss bet. You can set up any start and end date and set your own goal (within certain parameters set by HealthyWage). Here’s what you need to do to get started:

Step 1. Visit HealthyWage and play around with their handy calculator. With the calculator, you input different numbers – pounds to lose (between 10 – 150 pounds; the amount must be at least 10% of your current weight), number of months to achieve your goal (6 – 18 months) and monthly bet ($20 – 150 per month). The calculator will then tell you how much you would win provided you meet your goal (maximum $10,000). Everything is laid out so you know the prize amount before you begin. Play with the calculator all you want, you aren’t committed to anything until you sign up and place your bet.

Step 2. Once you find numbers you like, sign and up place your bet! You can either pay monthly or you can pay all at once. Just be aware that you are responsible for the full amount whether you complete the challenge or not. This really makes sense if you think about it. It would be too easy to quit if there were an option to stop making monthly payments should you have a bad month. Remember, the objective is to help you achieve your weight loss goals and persistence is key (even in the face of setbacks).

Step 3. Lose weight, achieve your goal and win money! There is a video weigh-in at both the beginning and end of your challenge to verify you actually lost the weight.

If you don’t meet your goal, then HealthyWage keeps the money you bet so that they can meet their expenses and pay out winnings to others who did meet their goal.

Is This Legitimate?

I promised to address this, because if you are like me, you must be thinking ‘this is too good to be true!’. HealthyWage was founded in 2009 in response to the research coming out of Harvard, Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pennsylvania that showed people tended to stick with their weight loss plans better when money was involved.

To date, over 2.3 million pounds have been lost from those using HealthyWage and over $1 million dollars has been paid out.

In addition to the many, many reviews that can be found online, HealthyWage has also been featured on NPR, CNN, The Doctors and the Today Show to name just a few.

Support Groups Make It Easier

While HealthyWage does have a Facebook page and connected community (great places to check out if you still have any doubts as to the legitimacy of HealthyWage), I have also started a Facebook group, Lose Before You Cruise. Anyone who is interested in losing weight is welcome, you don’t have to be taking part in HealthyWage to join. I see it as a place where we can support each other on our weight loss journeys while waiting for our next cruise! You can join the group here.

One other thing I wanted to mention about HealthyWage, you can use whatever works for you to lose the weight. HealthyWage does not promote any particular way to go nor do they sell a program or supplement.

So what are you waiting for? Head over to HealthyWage and see how much you can win after you lose!
